Caldwell revels in late show as he zeroes in on Fours title

Craigentinny’s recently-crowned bowls champion Andrew Caldwell continues to sparkle and having included the national triples title in his list of conquests the 25-year-old now has his sights on the Fours title of the Ian Mackay Contracts sponsored EBL Knockout Championships.

Caldwell has a cool nerve and certainly needed that quality in the quarter-final match against Leith having trailed Alistair Sellers, Graham Ward, Mike McBrierty and Duncan Davidson 9-7 with two ends to play.

Craigentinny edged two singles to take the game into an extra-end decider where Caldwell delivered the goods by skipping Ian Duncan, Ronnie Hoskin and Stuart McFarlane to the winning single.

The venue was Pilrig and there was more late drama in the Pairs with Norman Graham and Ross Fairbairn of Dean carding a double at the last to pip Neil Hunter and Ian Duffus of Tramway’s 10-9.

An extra-end climax in the Triples at Seafield saw Ross Wylie of Wardie deliver a last bowl cracker to skip Larry Sorrell and Alan Nichol to a 12-11 win over Jack Callard, Aaron Morris and Darren McArdle of Pilrig.

Pilrig’s bid to retain the Pairs title lives on with Darren McKenny skipping Willie Scott to a 1, 1 finish for a battling 12-10 win over Colin Bain and Stan Turnbull of Postal.

The Corstorphine Triple of Ian McLaren, Willie Stoddart and John Wilson made great space to 12-5 with a super 6 and clinched a 13-9 win over Donny Gilbertson’s West End rink.
