Campbell’s Swiss miss

Edinburgh’s Colin Campbell and his curling team had the small consolation of losing to the eventual winners at the Champery Masters in Switzerland.

Saturday’s 5-4 defeat to Sweden’s Niklas Edin forced them into the quarter-final play-offs where they began with a 7-2 victory over Olympic runner-up Thomas Ulsrud of Norway. But Swiss skip Peter De Cruz then ended their challenge 9-1.

David Murdoch exited at the same stage and Stirling’s Logan Gray lost in the last eight, leaving Aberdeen’s Tom Brewster to carry Scottish hopes. The world silver medallist came up fractionally short, losing his fourth major final this year as De Cruz came from behind to win 6-5 after an extra end.
