City survive Glasgow battle

City of Edinburgh passed their most difficult test since the turn of the year as they survived a four-set battle with City of Glasgow Ragazzi in the men’s Schelde Sports Scottish Volleyball League.

The team was short-handed through injury and things looked ominous when they lost the first set 20-25. But they dug deep to come through and maintain their unbeaten record, the key to victory being edging a marathon third set 31-29.

The 20-25, 25-20, 31-29, 25-21 victory sets them up nicely for a trip to champions Glasgow Mets this coming weekend.

“We got stronger as the match went on,” observed player-coach Barry McGuigan, “but it was an intense battle.”

In the women’s first division, City of Edinburgh had no such problems and came through in straight sets against Su Ragazzi 25-22, 25-19, 25-15.

Unbeaten Troon PA kept their place at the top of the table by beating South Ayrshire, also in straight sets, 25-8, 25-22, 25-7.
