Royals rout sorry Saltires

THE Saltires signed off their CB 40 campaign in disappointing fashion in Southampton, losing to Hampshire by 115 runs.

But it was the manner of defeat that was so dispiriting for the travelling Scots. In a contest reduced to 23 overs-a-side because of rain, the Saltires conceded their largest total in 40-overs cricket when they allowed their hosts to post 302 runs for the loss of just four wickets.

Jimmy Adams and James Vince were the destroyers at large, both posting centuries in a record-breaking partnership for the Royals.

Saltires coach Peter Steindl was forced to make five changes before an injury ruled out Josh Davey from batting duties.

George Walker, promoted to open, top scored with 46, and Preston Mommsen scored 31 from 33 balls.

Also into double figures were: Majid Haq (23), Oli Hairs (20), Craig Wallace (11), and Gordon Goudie (10no) in a total of 187 – the Saltires’ lowest score of the season.
