Currie 37-17 Watsonians: Currie book final place

Currie RFC booked their place in the final of the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup after beating Watsonians 37-17 in their final Group 2 qualifying match.

The Premiership side were in firm control by half-time, building a lead of 23-3. And they completed the task with a solid effort in the second period.

Jamie Forbes led the points scoring for the hosts with two tries, two penalties and three conversions, while Mike Entwhistle, Caleb van der Westerlo and Jack Broadley weighed in with a try apiece

In the final, which looks likely to take place at Malleny Park on Friday, Currie will meet Heriot’s, with a place in the quarter-finals of the RBS National Cup as the prize for the victors.

The Goldenacre men were also in action on Saturday and, for the second week in succession, they had to settle for a narrow-defeat bonus point. The 30-25 loss against Dundee High has inflicted further damage on the efforts of Phil Smith’s side to secure a top-four finish and a place in next season’s British & Irish Cup.

Fraser Brown gave Heriot’s the lead with a first-minute try, converted by Graham Wilson, who also booted a penalty but the Capital side trailed 17-10 at the break. A converted score from CJ Osazuwa squared matters before Dundee regained the initiative. However, a second penalty by Wilson and a try from Russell Nimmo secured a point for the visitors.

The result has moved Dundee into sixth in the table ahead of their trip to face Boroughmuir on Saturday in a match the relegation threatened Meggetland men must win.
