Currie leave the best until last in Gala

Delighted Currie coach Ally Donaldson has praised his men for their strong finale to Saturday’s impressive 32-12 win over Gala at Netherdale in RBS Premier A

The result, which atoned for a narrow opening day defeat against the Borderers, has moved the Malleny Park men into second spot in the league table and fired a warning to their fellow title hopefuls that the 2010 champions are back to their best and ready to challenge for the silverware. Dougie Fife bagged the first of Currie’s four touchdowns and he was joined on the score sheet by Dave Smith who intercepted then ran the length of the field, as the visitors built a 15-6 half time lead – Jamie Forbes kicking the other points and Lee Millar landing two penalties for Gala. Forbes booted another penalty and Millar was on target twice ensuring the hosts remained in touch entering the final minute. But converted tries by Forbes and Fife earned all five points for Donaldson’s men.

“It was very hard fought,” said the coach. “That late bonus point try could be really important.” Meanwhile, Haddington won 29-10 winners against Perthshire in the Premier Three basement battle at Neilson Park. Stuart Miller touched down twice for the hosts and Neil Watt joined him on the score sheet, with Ross King contributing 14 points from four penalties and a conversion.

The East Lothian men have set a five-year objective of gaining promotion to the new National League within two years and subsequently consolidating their place.
