Derby date to boost battle against illness

Former Scottish Cup champions Castlevale will reform with a team of ex-players and guests to face Edinburgh and District Sunday Amateur FA team Riverside United in a Craigmillar-Niddry derby.

All proceeds will go towards the charity nominated by event organiser Norrie Philp, who for four years has suffered from diabetes.

“I wanted to give back to the people who have done well for me at the ERI,” said Philp. “All I wanted to do was to leave a bit of cash for it, because the guys in the hospital have been brilliant to me.

“Basically we’re just going to have a good day, go back to the pub afterwards, and raise some money for the trust.”

My Philp’s children will stage a bucket collection among spectators during the game at Cavalry Park, then a charity auction will take place at Oman’s pub on Peffer Street, Craigmillar.

Amateur referee Gary McKenzie will take charge of the game, which comes less than five months after he officiated at the final of the JJ McKenzie Memorial Cup, named so in memory of his late wife Jacqueline, who passed away due to complications from diabetes.

Jacqueline was 47 when she died a year ago and Gary holds a position on the committee of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Diabetic Treatment Trust.

Colin Campbell Sports has generously donated match balls for the game.

Riverside United v Castle Vale will kick off on Sunday, September 18 at 1.30pm.
