Edinburgh University swimmers win short course gold medals

University of Edinburgh's Dan Wallace, Lucy Hope, Lizzie Simmonds and Corrie Scott all won gold medals on the last evening of the Scottish National Short Course Open Swimming Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Local athletes performed well during the three days of the event and the last session of nine was no different yesterday.

Wallace, the 24-year-old who won the men’s 400m IM at the Commonwealth Games back in 2014, came through in a time of 4:13.31.

Hope, 20, claimed top spot in the women’s 200m freestyle in 1:57.64 with her club team-mate Rachel Masson, 22, finishing second.

Simmonds, 26, lifted the women’s 100m backstroke title with a time of 58.05. Her team-mate Karen Reid finished third.

And Scott, 24, took gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:24.48.

University of Edinburgh’s Alex Ogbonna was just pipped to the men’s 50m butterfly title. Sean Campsie won it in 24.20 with Ogbonna, 18, picking up silver in 24.38.

Teenager Keanna MacInnes rounded off a good meet for herself with a third place in the women’s 400m IM.

On Friday, the Heart of Midlothian 16-year-old broke into the senior record books for the first time with a superb victory in the women’s 200m butterfly.

And last night she claimed bronze in the 400m IM event with a time of 4:45.77 with her Team Scotland team-mate for the Gold Coast Hannah Miley first.

Former Warrender swimmer Craig Benson, 23, won the men’s 200m breaststroke, the University of Stirling man edging out club team-mate Ross Murdoch in a time of 2:06.66. University of Edinburgh’s Calum Tait, 23, took the bronze. The meeting finished with the women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle relays. The University of Edinburgh ‘A’ team won the women’s race with their ‘B’ team third. And the University of Edinburgh men’s team were second.
