Amateurs: Edinburgh Rose fight back to defeat The Spartans

Edinburgh Rose were behind at the break but a penalty award got them going

Spartans started strongly and had secured a 2-0 lead by half-time. Stuart Fenwick opened the scoring when he turned his marker in the box and slid the ball home. Then, on the half hour, Ian Cartwright exploited a mistake at the heart of the Rose defence to seize the ball and send an effort crashing in from close range.

Rose had been well under par but quickly began to make amends after the interval. Callum Gallagher tucked away a penalty to reduce the deficit early on after the restart. Then, soon after, he sent Paul Dunlop through to beat the Spartans offside trap and finish past Spartans goalkeeper Andrew Livingstone.

With the momentum in their favour, Rose continued to bomb forward and took a deserved lead when Euan Bisset rose highest to head in at the back post. Then, with five minutes remaining, the hosts sealed  the win when Darren Smith’s corner snuck in past Livingstone at his far post.

Linlithgow Thistle into last 32

Linlithgow Thistle booked a spot in the last 32 of the Scottish Cup with a 4-0 win away against Menzieshill AFC at Dundee Uni Playing Fields.

Thistle had their keeper Scott Bruce to thank as he made a handful of important saves early on to keep the Tayside outfit at bay. Building on that, Thistle settled into the game and went ahead just before half-time, Dylan Robb venturing down the left and crossing for Sean Smith to head in.

After the break, Thistle continued to hold the upper hand and, after Gary Mitchell hit the bar for the visitors, Robb assisted again when his corner found Keiran Welsh, who scored with a header.

Menzieshill were deflated and Thistle took full advantage, adding two more goals as the half wore on. Alan Stewart picked up the ball on the right and found Billy Bauros, who smashed the ball home from 12 yards to make it 3-0. Then, Wayne Meikle lashed the ball in first time on the edge of the box to make it 28 scored and none conceded in the competition for Thistle.

St Bernards go joint top

St BERNARDS went joint top of the Lothian East division after overcoming Salters Athletic 2-0 at the Royal High School.

After a lengthy deliberation about whether the game should take place due to snow and ice, Saints got things underway and, after 25 minutes, they converted a chance when Ryan Raeburn stormed through from 30 yards and slotted in low past goalie Jamie Anderson.

Shortly after, it seemed the keeper had redeemed himself by making a handful of saves in quick succession to deny Raeburn a second but, just as the half was over, Brad Hainey’s cross from the right found Raeburn unmarked in the box and he turned the ball in.

The conditions got worse after the break but the game ran to its full conclusion.
