Amateurs: St Bernard's beat Pathhead to stay unbeaten

It took St Bernards 40 minutes in which to break the deadlock, but they went on to score three more

After a back-and-forth opening 40 minutes, Saints broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle. Lee Walker knocked the ball down for Steven Wilson to slot home from six yards.

When the half resumed, Walker got his name on the scoresheet as he leapt to head in a corner from the right.

Pathhead pulled one back through James MacDougall’s glancing header from a Paul Mercer free-kick.

Saints were keen to kill the game off and thought they had done so when Darren Nicol cut in from the left and smashed the ball into the top-right corner. But, once more, Pathhead replied when substitute Darren Gough turned in a drilled cross at the back post.

It was still unclear which way the game would go entering the last ten minutes but Saints dug deep. Substitute Darren Thomson made it 4-2 as he smashed the ball in off the bar from just outside the 18-yard box.

Smith finds path to glory

Scott Smith punished ten-man Craigroyston CYFC to help Redpath Albion progress to the McDonald Cup third round with a 3-1 win at Academy Park.

After a blistering start to the game, the dynamic of the cup tie changed five minutes in when Craigie goalkeeper Stuart Scott was dismissed for a foul on Danny McQuade. Smith took responsibility for the resultant penalty and he fired Albion ahead with a calm strike past substitute goalie Gary Ulke.

Albion made it 2-0 15 minutes later. McQuade flicked the ball on at the edge of the box to the back post and Smith stuck the ball away with ease.

To their credit, Craigie ended the half on top and had a goal to show for their hard work. Brendan Muir struck a loose ball home in the box to get one back for his side. But, after the interval, Albion played no-nonsense football and added a third goal with ten minutes to go as Andrew Fraser won the ball in the box and squared it for Smith to poke home for his hat-trick.

BoS Strollers close the gap

Bank of Scotland Strollers closed the gap at the top of the Edinburgh West division as they defeated table-toppers Salvesen 3-1 at Broughton High School.

Strollers made their opportunities count early on. Graeme Clement picked the ball up inside the box before whipping it into the bottom left corner for 1-0.

Salvesen’s task was made harder five minutes later as David Ross was shown a straight red for a two-footed tackle.

Strollers scored a second goal midway through the half.

Connor Preston got down the right wing before cutting the ball back for Jack Windram to fire in at the front post.

And Clement made it 3-0 as he turned in a corner from five yards just before the break.

Salvesen fought hard in the second half and Craig Fraser headed in a consolation goal from a crossed ball late on but it was not their day.
