Andy Webster still has faith in ‘icon’ Craig Levein

ANDY WEBSTER threw his support behind Craig Levein today and insisted that the Scotland manager is an icon every single one of the national side’s players can look up to.

The Hearts player moved to defend Levein, who has come under fire from supporters and the media following a disappointing start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Dark Blues have drawn their opening two Group A matches, against Serbia and Macedonia, and bookies are now slashing odds on Levein being sacked before the World Cup qualifiers are over.

However, Scotland’s bid to make it to their first major finals since France 98 was helped by Wales’ shock 6-1 defeat in Serbia on Tuesday night and the draw between group favourites Croatia and Belgium, results which mean that they find themselves just two points off the top of the table.

Webster, who played under Levein at Tynecastle and at Dundee United, insists it is not in Levein’s nature to throw in the towel. He said: “He will always stand up and be counted. It is not in his nature to do anything else. He is a great icon for the players to look up to. You need to be single-minded in football at times.”
