Arniston win praise despite Musselburgh's late winner

The Conservatory Converters Fife & Lothians Cup clash looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out but Davie’s last-minute effort secured a 2-1 win for the visitors.

Landells, though, was pleased after an improved display from his Premier League team against top-tier opponents.

“We more than matched them and it was a great improvement on last week’s display [a 4-1 defeat at Bathgate].

“We created a few problems for them and it’s a lesson for us because we want to play at this level every week.

“Our aim this season is to get into the top three of this league and hopefully win a place in the Super League.

“This club has been through a lot but now this is a club on the up.

“We have a very hard working committee, who are backing the players all the way.

“Musselburgh only really caused us problems from set-pieces and that’s where their goals came from.

“It was disappointing to lose the goal in the last minute because we fancied our chances in a penalty shoot-out.”

Both teams created openings in the first half but both goalkeepers were up to the task for anything thrown at them.

The breakthrough came in the 40th minute after a good move down the right by Musselburgh.

Michael Moffat forced a save from Arniston keeper Dale Cornet at the expense of a corner. From the kick, the home defence failed to clear properly allowing Gary Cherrie to volley home from ten yards.

The Musselburgh celebrations didn’t last long as, on the half-time whistle, Arniston scored a deserved equaliser. Good play from Darren Leslie and Lumbert Kataleza gave Darren McTernan the opportunity wide left and he drove the ball past Kieron Renton from 12 yards.

In the second half, Musselburgh’s David Dunn brought out the best in goalkeeper Cornet with a header on the hour mark.

The longer the game went on, the more likely it was going to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. But, in the last minute of regulation time, Musselburgh scored the winner. A long free-kick from deep in their own half put the Arniston defence under pressure with the ball landing at the feet of Davie, who blasted it into the net.
