“We weren’t at the races today, not just a couple of players but everyone on the park,” he said after victory was claimed by a goal from Ross Philp.

McGonigal added: “The only good thing about this game is we won, just. Last season we would have drawn it or dropped points but we showed a fighting spirit today and got the result. That’s the only thing that matters. To be fair Dundonald deserved something from the game. We we’re hanging on a bit at the end when they hit the bar, but it’s a win.”

Dundonald took the game to their hosts from the start. Brodie Gray had a great effort well saved by Darren Jamieson in the tenth minute. But Bo’ness took the lead in the 25th minute through Roddy MacLennan. Fraser Keast set him up with a great pass, allowing MacLennan to waltz round the Dundonald defence and slide the ball into the net.

Dundonald levelled the match in the 48th minute. Lewis McKenzie was sent crashing down in the penalty area, with Ben Anthony scoring from the spot.

Again Dundonald pushed hard but, in the 75th minute, Bo’ness regained the lead again against the run of play. Will Snowdon sent in a free kick which Stuart Hunter headed on to Philp who scored at the back post. For the remaining 10 minutes or so Bo’ness hung on for dear life, with the Fifers hitting the bar in the dying minutes.

Philp echoed his manager’s words. “To be honest, we didn’t deserve that win,” he said.
