Bonnyrigg shocked by Broxburn

There was a shock in Section C of the Dechmont Forklift League Cup last night as Broxburn trounced Super League side Bonnyrigg 4-1 to knock them out of the race for a semi-final spot.

Penicuik, however, had their eyes on that last-four place and they made no mistake by hammering Spartans 5-0 to overtake Broxburn in top spot on goal difference.

Broxburn, though, are waiting to learn the result of their protest after Livingston played an ineligible player in an earlier tie. Broxburn are claiming two points from that game – which ended in a draw – and, until that protest is settled, Penicuik’s semi-final match against Linlithgow Rose can’t go ahead.

Broxburn raced into a three-goal lead in last night’s game with strikes from David Morrison, Chic Pearson and Stuart Cairns. Gary Millar added a fourth in the second half. Broxburn boss Steve Pittman said: “The players were absolutely terrific and we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Penicuik had the game against Spartans sewn up by half-time. They were four up with goals from Chris Roxburgh, James McPartlin, Dean Knight and Johnny Harvey with Knight completing a double in the second half.

Manager Craig Meikle was a happy man: “We’re top of the section on goal difference. I think on last night’s performance alone we deserve to be in the semi-final.”

Section D saw Newtongrange edge Haddington 1-0 with a Blair Tolmie goal to clinch the semi-final spot. Elsewhere last night, Edinburgh beat Pumpherston 2-1, while West Calder lost 3-1 at home to Whitburn. Dalkeith finally won a game in beating Tranent 3-1 with Blackburn having a 4-0 win at home to Harthill.
