Broxburn Athletic are out to end a six-year wait without a win over Penicuik Athletic

Broxburn Athletic assistant manager Scott McNaughton says his side are determined to end their six-year wait without a win over “bogey team” Penicuik Athletic at Albyn Park tomorrow.

Brox have failed to beat the Midlothian men since they made the move to the East of Scotland League from the Juniors, with their last win a 2-1 success over Penicuik in the old East Super League.

“I know Stevie [McLeish, Penicuik manager] well having played under him at Newtongrange,” said McNaughton.

“He will have his team set up well and they’ve got good players, particularly in the forward areas. They have a winning mentality. They lost a couple of players in the summer, and I think a lot of people would have thought they might not have done as well, but they have had a great start to the season.

“We need to take the game to them and hopefully get a positive result. Penicuik are one of our bogey teams, it’s definitely something we need to address.”

Brox have made a stuttering start to this season’s Premier Division campaign and face an in-form Penicuik outfit brimming with confidence.

McNaughton continued: “It’s been a frustrating start for us. We’ve had problems getting boys on the park; I have never seen an injury list like it. We’ve been going week to week with about ten boys missing, so it’s been difficult.

“We carried quite a big squad at the start of the season and it’s lucky we did, because it’s managed to get us through games. We’ve drawn four games in the league, and I would say at least two or maybe even three of them we probably should have won.

“Hopefully we can get some boys on the park soon and we can start to push on, because we would probably expect to be up near the top end of the table towards the end of the season, that’s where we need to be.

“We need to stop conceding so many goals. We’ve had a chat about that the last couple of weeks, we need more of a desire to stop conceding goals.”
