Craigroyston crushed by Heriot-Watt’s goal blitz

Heriot-WATT UNIVERSITY signalled their intentions of making a quick return to the Central Taxis Premier Division, after being relegated on the final day of last season, when they beat Craigroyston 3-0 at Riccarton, all the goals coming in the second half.

The game was evenly balanced in the opening 45 minutes with Martin Laidlaw almost giving Craigroyston the lead, but his 20-yard shot rebounded off the post and John Herd hit an effort inches wide of the students’ goal.

However, in the first minute of the second half, Craigroyston conceded possession allowing Brendan Napier to drive forward and hit an unstoppable 25-yard shot into the postage stamp corner of the net. On the hour mark, Gavin Main latched on to a header from Matt Travis and sprinted behind the Craigroyston defence to score with a left foot shot from 16 yards.

Craigroyston again lost the ball in their own half and Banji Koya wasted no time in dispatching a 12 yard powerfully hit shot past the exposed Dale Cornet in the Craigroyston goal.

Michael Renwick, the University head coach, said: “I am obviously very happy because I thought that we played well, especially in the second half, and it was equally pleasing to keep a clean sheet. That’s two wins now in the league so we must try to keep that momentum going. Although Craigroyston hit the post I felt that we were in control and it is essential that we win our home games in this First Division. We are desperate to bounce back at the first attempt.”

George Bowmaker, the Craigroyston boss, said: “We were pathetic. We did not do the basic things right and put ourselves under pressure when we did not need to. We did not make the correct passes and it seems like we have taken two steps forward and five backwards.”

Elsewhere, Preston Athletic kept up their 100 per cent record with a hat-trick from Kevin Cairnie, two of them penalties, helping earn the Pennypit side a 4-0 win against Ormiston. Euan Campbell also netted after his penalty was parried and he slotted home the rebound.

“The clean sheet was very pleasing and promotion is about winning your home games,” said Preston manager Stevie Myatt.
