Currie Star 16s claim back-to-back derby bragging rights

Currie Star went behind in the Division 3 game but quickly regrouped to win 5-2

After the reverse fixture finished 1-1 and Star won the League Cup clash between the two teams 2-1, Currie FC were determined to get a result at the third time of asking. However, Star were in the mood from the word go and they were ruthless in attack.

The game began in a typically feisty fashion with both Star and Currie getting in some meaty challenges in the early stages. Currie got the breakthrough less than ten minutes in. Nathan Baxter whipped in a corner from the left-hand side which Lewis Anderson turned towards goal from close range, ricocheting off a number of bodies before nestling in the bottom left corner.

After Currie keeper Aiden Coleman was twice called into action by the opposition, Star carved out a reply with 25 minutes gone. Reece Avinou used pace and power to get down the right-hand flank and cutting into the box to smash the ball into the bottom left corner.

Currie immediately conceded once more as Star capitalised on a lapse of concentration, to turn the game on its head. Avinou was the architect and the goalscorer once again as he burst down the right side once more to finish from just outside the box, making it two goals in the space of 60 seconds.

The momentum was firmly with Star and as the half progressed only one side looked like scoring, and they did so again to make it 3-1 with half-time just around the corner. Mark McCann was played in behind the Currie defence and slotted in low past Coleman to give Star a two-goal cushion in the game.

The second half began with Currie coming mighty close to finding a way back into the game. Anderson closed down Star goalie Cameron Martin to win the ball six yards out, but from a tight angle he could only cannon a shot off the post.

What followed came as a sucker punch to Currie as Star added another. McCann added another to his tally on the counter attakc with a neat finish one-on-one.

The fight had well and truly gone from Currie now and Star were full of confidence as they didn’t let up in attack, determined to extend the winning margin. It wasn’t long before a fifth goal came as Avinou again rampaged down the right, sending through Dylan Tillbrook to bury the ball under Coleman from 12 yards.

There was no way back for Currie but late on they did at least manage a second goal. Jordan McGinley got his name on the scoresheet with a goal from absolutely nowhere as he took aim from 25 yards with a thunderous strike that completely deceived Martin in the Star goal.

With five minutes to go though there was no time for a late comeback as Star’s relentless attacking force had put them well out of sight to take all three points.
