David Moyes: Stubbs should stay and lead Hibs to promotion

The Easter Road head coach’s stock is high after he wrote his name into the history books on Saturday by becoming the first man to lead the club to Scottish Cup glory in 114 years.

Stubbs, who is contracted for another year, has been the subject of regular speculation linking him with jobs down south, and supporters are wary that, after a second failed promotion bid, the prospect of a third season in the Scottish Championship may prompt him to quit Hibs this summer.

However, Moyes, who managed the 44-year-old at Everton for several seasons and then gave him his first coaching job when he asked him to take charge of the Toffees’ Under-21s in 2008, believes Stubbs should remain in Edinburgh and try to build on the work he has done to galvanise the club over the last two years.

In an exclusive interview with the Evening News, the 53-year-old Scot, who earned the Manchester United manager’s job after an impressive 11-year reign at Goodison Park, said: “I’m a great believer that you shouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to climb the ladder. Take your time. I hope Alan will stay and take Hibs up next season. They’ve been to two cup finals this season, which is an incredible achievement in itself for Hibs, and they were unlucky to miss out in the play-offs. I think he’s in a good place at the moment. It’s not for me to tell him what to do, but I think Alan and Hibs are both on to a good thing just now and they should look to stay together and get the club back up. Hibs are a big miss to the Premiership and, if they can get their support, with that level of enthusiasm, back into the Premiership, it will be great for Scottish football.”
