Edinburgh students keep 100 per cent record intact

Edinburgh UNIVERSITY maintained their 100 per cent record in the defence of the inter-Scottish Universities Queen’s Park Shield when they beat Stirling University 3-2 at Peffermill.

However, it was not quite a straight-forward win for the footballing students of Edinburgh, who had to recover from being a goal behind at half-time after Johnny Tague had given Stirling a 20th-minute lead.

The second half was less than two minutes old when Edinburgh equalised with an unstoppable 15-yard shot from midfield player Dan Ward. Conor Regan, with his first goal for Edinburgh in the Queen’s Park Shield, fired them ahead but Darren Dalrymple pounced to give Stirling the equaliser.

Straight from the kick-off, Edinburgh regained the lead when a Ruaraidh Hamilton through-ball picked out Calum Murray, who scored with an eight-yard shot at the near post.

In a tousy end to the game, Stirling had goalkeeper Stephen Donnelly and midfield player Graeme Lindsay sent off.

Edinburgh have now won all three of their games in the competition and head coach Douglas Samuel said: “Until half-time we simply did not play. However, after half-time we showed what we are capable of and I am absolutely delighted to have won.”

Meanwhile, Heriot-Watt also maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 4-2 victory over Glasgow University with goals from Michael Webster, Erik Thomson and a penalty each from Gavin Malin and Sean Muhsin securing the win.
