Edinburgh University’s Mark Waters admits the students are in a relegation dogfight but believes they have finally turned a corner.

Dorian Ogunro’s men are currently second from bottom, last weekend’s 1-0 success over Cumbernauld Colts lifting the Capital men off the foot of the table and two points clear of Vale of Leithen.

Uni have won just two games all season ahead of tomorrow’s visit of city rivals Spartans.

But architecture student Waters believes they can pick up the points needed that will see them climb the table.

"We lost some big names in the dressing room from last season,” the 24-year-old midfielder explained.

“But, in the main, we’ve been putting in some decent performances and challenging even the bigger teams and then we seem to switch off.

"We’ve still got a young team and in this league, as soon as you make a mistake, you’re punished. It’s been a big learning curve but we’ve stopped shipping goals like we were at the start of the season.

“It was a huge win last week and a big boost because it was against a team who are pushing towards the top half. We believe we shouldn’t be down towards the bottom but it’s about making sure we put it together on a consistent basis.

“We’ve started to realise that we are in a bit of a situation. I think earlier in the year when we weren’t getting results, we were always thinking that it would turn in our favour soon. But as the weeks have rolled on, we now realise we do have a fight on our hands to stay in the league.

"A lot of the boys haven’t been in this position before but we need to step up. We’ve still got to play four teams who are just above us so if we can pick up points there then suddenly we’ll be looking up towards mid-table.

“We’re looking forward to this weekend. It’s a game most will have already written us off. We know they’re a tough team with some quality players but we’re here to prove we’re in this league on merit.”
