“It was fitting that Dougie got the winner,” Jardine said. “He’s been one of, if not the top player at this level for the last ten years, and he’s been outstanding for us. For him to seal it with the goal that wins it – brilliant.

Jardine went on to praise his players for their achievements. “There’s very few teams in the world that win two titles in a row,” he said. “You need to be a top side at any level to do that. We targeted a challenge and cup this year and wanted to be there or thereabouts.

“The run we’ve put together – we’re unbeaten this year and they’re so determined. When the quality of football isn’t what we want, you’re guaranteed the hunger and desire will be, and that’s showed.”

Lowland League chairman Andrew Waddell also gave plaudits to City. He said: “Congratulations to Edinburgh City on winning the Lowland League for a second consecutive season. Everyone agrees that the standard on the pitch has been higher than ever this year and City have risen to the challenge to retain the title. Well done!”
