The EURO 2024 hosts picked up another three points in Group A, here is what it means for Steve Clarke and the Tartan Army...

Host nation Germany made it six points from a possible six so far in Group A at EURO 2024 with a 2-0 win over Hungary in Stuttgart.

Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala and İlkay Gündoğan of Barcelona scored either side of half time to secure a second win for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. It’s a result that means the German’s are the first team to secure their progression to the knockout stages of the tournament but there are still plenty matches remaining in the pool.

One of those remaining matches is Scotland v Switzerland which kicks off at 8pm. Here is what the result from Stuttgart means for Scotland’s qualification chances:

How does Germany’s win over Hungary impact Scotland chances of qualification?

In truth, a win for Germany was the best possible result for Scotland. Steve Clarke’s side now know that two wins from their remaining two games plus the Germans beating Switzerland or drawing on Sunday will guarantee their progression in second place. However, it also boosts their chances of going through as one of the four best third place sides.

A win is obviously the most desirable result in Cologne but a draw would still give Scotland a real chance of qualifying if they beat the Hungarians at the weekend. Defeat tonight doesn’t eliminate Scotland but it would have been all but confirmed had Hungary actually beaten Germany.

How many points do Scotland need to qualify from the group?

We don’t know at this stage exactly but six points would almost certainly be enough not just to qualify but to qualify in second, depending on the result of Germany v Switzerland. Four point would also likely be enough for a best placed third place qualification.

Would three points be enough? It’s possible. Croatia’s draw with Albania in Group B was a good result for the rest of the tournament as it means there is a real possibility both those nations will now finish on just one point each. If another group sees their third and fourth place teams only finish on one or zero points then three points would be enough for the rest of the third place teams to go through.
