A new dynamic has been added to the rest of the 25/26 season if you’re a Scotland-eligible player - as a race to the World Cup begins.
Steve Clarke’s side secured passage to the tournament in America, Canada and Mexico with a magical 4-2 win over Denmark midweek. Hearts’ Craig Gordon and Lawrence Shankland played their part in victory while Hibs’ Grant Hanley proved a reliable rock at the back as a first World Cup berth since 1998 was clinched.
Now attentions turn to who jet out with the team next year. Head coach Clarke will likely retain the core group of experienced stars who got Scotland there but wildcards in certain positions can’t be totally written off. Here are 13 candidates who could come into thinking.

5. Josh Mulligan (Hibs)
Has been called up but hasn't played. Can play right-back and central midfield with his game going up a notch since joining Hibs. Continued form will surely see him in consideration at least. | SNS Group

6. Craig Halkett (Hearts)
Injuries have been put to the side this season and Halkett has again reinstated himself as one of the Premiership's top centre-backs. Not an area where options are flush and if Hearts remain fighting at the top, has to be on the radar. | Getty Images

7. Karamoko Dembele (QPR)
Eligible for a couple of nations including Scotland. Ben Doak's injury could leave the nation light on pace out wide and winger has started to come onto a game at QPR in the Championship. Has been with England at youth level. | Cameron Smith/Getty Images Photo: Cameron Smith/Getty Images

8. Jason Steele (Brighton)
Brighton keeper was reportedly in talks to play for Scotland before Euro 2024 but is rumoured to have rejected the chance. Has at least played some cup games and comes with experience of top level where rust shouldn't be as big a factor. | Arsenal FC via Getty Images
