There is no better opportunity for youngsters breaking through at Scottish clubs than the coming 2020/21 season. And, equally, there is no better opportunity for clubs to switch their focus to developing academy talents. Both Hearts and Hibs fans will likely see more game time for their talented starlets.
This is because the coming campaign will see clubs operating with tighter than normal budgets and smaller squads as they feel the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Behind closed door games mean a lack of gate receipt and smaller revenues. But on the positive side, it should create a space for young talents to get more game time, earn experience and even make a name for themselves.

1. Miko Virtanen (Aberdeen)
Last season was huge in the midfielder’s development. For the first time in his career he got consistent first-team football and thrived. After two substitute appearances, Virtanen soon became a key cog in Arbroath’s successful Championship campaign. Not flashy but dependable. Could provide solidity to Aberdeen’s midfield. 2. Finn Ecrepont (Ayr United)
At one point the defender was having to get permission to miss school to train with the first-team. Has been highly rated for a long time and is a regular in the youth Scotland squads. Only played once last season, however. Photo: SNS Group Ross Parker
3. Karamoko Dembele (Celtic)
There is plenty of hype around the 17-year-old who has played for both Scotland and England at youth international levels. He has already featured for Celtic’s first team, having trained with them as a 15-year-old. There is a sense of anticipation building around this exciting, precocious talent breaking through. 4. Luca Connell (Celtic)
