The Scottish Championship season is still underway, but while Hearts are making heavy work of it at present, they’ll still be expected to take the league crown at a canter and start next season back in the top flight of Scottish Premiership.
In order to compete in the manner that fans would demand – absolutely nothing less than a top six finish and pushing for top four – there will have to be some improvements to the Tynecastle squad over the summer.
Thankfully, with the ongoing financial uncertainty due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there are a number of talented players currently plying their trade in the Scottish top flight who are still available to snap up on a free transfer this summer.
These are just a handful of those...
1. Jon Guthrie (Livingston)
Some would say Hearts have been stung already with Livingston centre-backs, but if they want to go back to the well again, Guthrie has been in great form the last two seasons. Photo: Craig Foy - SNS Group
2. Jason Naismith (Ross County)
A former Hibby but that shouldn't put you off. Naismith is a rampaging right-back who'd be the perfect option if Hearts want a younger alternative to Michael Smith. Photo: Paul Devlin - SNS Group
3. Aaron Tshibola (Kilmarnock)
A technically excellent central midfielder who can set the tempo with his composure and passing. He's been good in an otherwise disappointing Killie team. Photo: Craig Foy - SNS Group
4. Greg Stewart (Rangers)
Hearts should be in the market for a No.10 and Stewart is the best option out there in the Scottish game who'll be available on a free. Photo: Craig Foy - SNS Group
