Arbroath v Hearts LIVE: Play-by-play action from Gayfield Park

Last updated: Saturday, 20 March, 2021, 16:52

It’s all over at Gayfield. Hearts put in considerable pressure in the final 20 minutes as the introductions of Kastaneer and Walker, along with the link-play of Gnanduillet, helped bring their play up a couple of notches. Ultimately, though, they paid the price for failing to get out of first gear for most of the game.

Popescu attacks an Irving corner but can’t direct it towards goal.

    75 - Final Hearts sub

Kingsley is forced off through injury. Walker takes his place. White will go to left-back.

Nearly an instant impact from the substitute. Kastaneer’s shot at the far post is almost diverted home by Boyce. Instead, the striker manages to stop the ball stone dead before seeing his flick cleared off the line. The loose ball is then almost turned in by Irving. The Arbroath defender gets there first, blasting it off the midfielder but it still doesn’t find the back of the net as the home side are able to clear.

    Kastaneer is on for Mackay-Steven.

A low free-kick from Irving is almost sliced into the back of his own net by Little. The Arbroath defender is relieved to see the ball spin over for a corner.

Pignatiello drives inside after rescuing the ball at the touchline. He’s allowed to move to the edge of the area where his shot is powerful but rises over the bar.

Boyce is cautioned after catching O’Brien on the angle as the two contested a 50-50 near the touchline.

    59 min - Hearts shot

The away side have what seems to be their first shot on target. Boyce made the ball stick in attack, allowing Gnanduillet to pick it up, drive to his right and hit a low shot that was gathered by Gaston at the second attempt.

    57 min - Arbroath chance

Another opportunity for the hosts. This one comes from a corner after Halkett was forced to clear with Hamilton threatening to run through on goal. An inswinging corner by Linn was directed toward goal by O’Brien, who was denied by a clearance before the ball could reach the goal.

    Hearts half-time sub

McEneff has stayed inside for the second period. He’s been replaced by White as Hearts move to a flat 4-4-2.

    Arbroath half-time sub

McKenna has been brought on for Doolan as the hosts make a change up front.

    Second-half underway

Hearts take kick-off with the scores tied at 0-0.

Hearts have been really poor in the opening exchanges and are fortunate not to be behind. Arbroath’s energy has stifled their ability to knock the ball about successfully and they’ve often been forced into knocking long where, despite the aerial prowess of both Gdanduillet and Boyce, they haven’t managed to cause the home defence much bother.

At the other end, the Hearts defence, particularly Popescu, looks shaky, while none of the midfield four have been overly influential.

Heart-in-mouth moment for Hearts. Popescu retrieves a through ball and moves towards the six-yard box under the attentions of Hamilton. Gordon vacates his goal to give of a pass, which Popescu uses - but not once he stumbled a little in his own goalmouth. Any slip from the defender would’ve led to a goal. Thankfully for the visitors he kept his feet and knocked it to Gordon to clear.
