Hearts midfielder Peter Haring is set to play for the first time in 16 months in a closed-door game against Falkirk next week.

His long-awaited injury comeback is pencilled in for Tuesday, although he will only take part in a small portion of the friendly match.

Persistent groin and pelvic problems have sidelined the Austrian since the Scottish Cup final in May 2019 but he is finally poised for a return.

A rehabilitation programme following hernia surgery in June has gone to plan and Hearts will gradually re-introduce him to games over the coming weeks.

Haring’s first outing will be a major step forward in his recovery. The Hearts manager Robbie Neilson told the Evening News that the 27-year-old will be treated cautiously to avoid any potential setback.

“We are hopeful that Peter will play a part in that game next week. It won't be a huge part, maybe only 15 or 20 minutes, but that would be a massive step for him,” said Neilson.

“He has come through training really well and I'm really pleased with him. We will give him a very gradual build up over the course of the next couple of months.

“I've been delighted with Peter’s attitude since I came back to Hearts and I think he will be a huge player for us once he is back to full fitness.

"If we get him fit and keep him fit, we have a real leader in the group, a big physical presence, a guy with good experience at a good age who communicates well with the rest of the team.

“We are hopeful he gets through all of this because he will be a big asset for us in the season ahead.”

Haring recently resumed training with the Hearts squad at Riccarton as he looks to slowly increase his daily workload during sessions.

Club captain Steven Naismith is back in full training after a calf injury interrupted his pre-season preparations. He is also due to be involved against Falkirk.

“Naisy is back training with us and ready to get involved in some matches soon, so things are looking good with him and Peter so far,” said Neilson.

Defender Christophe Berra is doubtful for the start of the Betfred Cup campaign next month, though. He is also nursing a calf issue.

“Christophe still has a few weeks to go. He's taking a wee bit longer than we hoped,” admitted Neilson.
