Gary Mackay: Hearts' biggest transfer window has still to come

Two transfer windows so far have shown that Robbie Neilson is trying to mould Hearts into his own team and re-establish the club's DNA.

This summer coming will be his biggest window yet. Twelve players have arrived at Tynecastle Park between last summer and January and Robbie will now know who he wants to challenge within the group to get them back to the levels they are capable of.

There will be more additions over the summer and then he will hopefully have what he is looking for next season if we are back in the Premiership. Recruitment will be key for the top flight.

It looks like the management team want to get Hearts back to a certain DNA that they've been missing in recent years. The aim seems to be a more dynamic middle-to-front area, getting people in wide areas and trying to attack opponents.

That is music to the ears of many fans after a few seasons where the team looked a shadow of what a Hearts side should resemble. You certainly won’t hear many complaints from me if we are going forward and scoring goals.

I would like to see us play two striker up front in a 4-4-2 at times, especially with Armand Gnanduillet now in place and able to partner Liam Boyce. A crucial thing is that the manager can now play different formations with the personnel he has.

A lot of attacking players have arrived, particularly during the January window. I now think he needs to look defensively for the summer and that won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has watched Hearts regularly online or on TV this terms.

The club should be trying to bring in one or two quality defenders who will enhance the squad – perhaps free transfers who will cost maybe a wee bit more in salaries. I think they are looking in that direction with the lad Stuart Findlay at Kilmarnock.

Robbie will know the defensive area needs improved but hopefully we will have John Souttar returning in the summer. That would be like a new signing in itself for returning to the Premiership.
