The winger signed on the dotted line on Friday, penning a two-and-a-half year deal, becoming the club’s first January signing.

A key factor in his decision was Robbie Neilson. The pair were team-mates at Dundee United during the 2011/12 season.

Back then Mackay-Steven knew his new boss had what it took to become a manager.

He told HeartsTV: “It was a no brainer once I had heard from the manager, seeing his plan and vision for the club, knowing myself how big a club it is, I couldn’t wait to be here.

"I know the manager, played with him briefly. I’ve been watching from afar knowing he has done a great job everywhere he's been. I spoke to him and he showed his plan for Hearts.

"He’s so knowledgeable, knew the game inside out. I saw him as a leader and a manager. It’s no surprise how he’s gone on and done so well.

"Having that bit of knowledge about him and having the opportunity to work for him is a nice feeling. It's a good fit.”

Mackay-Steven last played in December but doesn’t think it will take him long to get up and running and reach match fitness.

The 30-year-old is looking forward to experiencing what the club has to offer.

He said: “I knew from playing here what the supporters are like, what the stadium is like. It’s an amazing place.

"You want to be a part of that and having the opportunity now it just feels right. It certainly feels right.”
