Many would have viewed this as an important fixture in the second tier title race back in the summer when the fixture list was released. These two teams were meant to be first and second in the league.

While Hearts have maintained their side of the bargain as odds-on pre-season favourites, Dundee have struggled. Last weekend they dropped out of the play-off spots after a run of four games without a win, since beating Hearts 3-1 at Dens Park at the start of the year. However, they defeated Inverness CT during the week to jump back into fourth.

The Tynecastle side have been on a three game winless streak, drawing all three 1-1. But they still have a strong lead at the top of the Championship.

Performances have been criticised and Robbie Neilson will be hoping for a display the standard of the opening game of the league season when Hearts thumped Dundee 6-2.

How the Hearts players rated in the key 2-1 success over Dundee

Hearts got back to winning ways at Tynecastle Park with a big 2-1 win over Dundee, ending a three-game winless run.

Hearts will be delighted with the three points after Dundee put plenty of pressure on towards the end. The same energy in the transition to attack wasn’t quite there but chances were still fashioned. Boyce hit the bar after GMS’ inexplicable miss. It will need to be seen to be believed.

Craig Gordon was the key player after the break, producing not one but two double saves.

There is a degree of sympathy for Peter Haring after he was sent off. He was left bemused by decision and was clearly upset.

The win takes Hearts closer to a return to the top-flight with a 15 point gap.

Gordon was forced into a double save. After letting Cummings low drive squirm free he reacted quickly to smother a Sow rebound.

GMS makes up slightly for his sitter by playing a low cross which evaded three Dundee players and found Gnanduillet. His shot rebounds off Hamilton back on to him and over Hamilton.

The home side hit the bar.
