Hearts’ 2012 Scottish Cup-winning goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald is available on a free contract this summer.

The 34-year-old turned down a renewal offer from Kilmarnock, the Ayrshire club confirmed.

MacDonald made over 130 appearances for Killie after joining in 2015 with the club labelling him a “great servant”.

He fell out of favour in the past couple of seasons, spending some of the last campaign on loan at Championship side Alloa Athletic despite Kilmarnock having some difficulties with goalkeepers.

MacDonald played 137 times for Hearts, earning the No.1 spot during the 2011/12 campaign following a contract dispute between Marian Kello and the club’s hierarchy.

He was between the sticks for the 2012 Scottish Cup thumping of Hibs and continued to show his shot-stopping qualities in his final two seasons as the club struggled on and off the field, eventually dropping into the Championship.

MacDonald was allowed to leave the club in summer 2014, opting to join Falkirk.

During his time with Hearts, the player was required to take a 50 per cent wage cut due to the club’s financial difficulties.

He recently recalled that period and spoke on the future in an interview with the Evening News.

“Nobody knows what will happen, how quickly this virus is going to disappear, or when football will be back,” he said. “The unknown makes it all the more scary. You can cope with things when you know what’s happening.

“You can work round it but, right now, nobody knows what is going on or how to deal with it.”
