After starting against Slovakia on Sunday afternoon, Craig Gordon now holds the longest international career in Scottish men’s football.

The Hearts goalkeeper was preferred to David Marshall after the latter was given a rest following his heroics in Thursday’s Euro 2020 play-off victory against Serbia, which enabled Gordon to claim the honour from his international team-mate.

Gordon made his first cap for the national team all the way back in 2004 in a 4-1 friendly victory over Trinidad and Tobago. His latest cap comes 16 years, five months and 16 days after his first.

Marshall, however, isn’t far behind him. The Derby County keeper first appeared in a 3-0 defeat to Hungary less than three months after Gordon’s bow. At present his record stands at 16 years, two months, 25 days.

Though he won’t claim back the record if, as expected, he starts against Israel on Wednesday, he will if he remains the No.1 choice going forward.

Thanks to Craig Anderson for the statistic.
