Tynecastle officials agreed a deal with Dinamo last night to secure Popescu’s signature on a free transfer despite his contract running until next summer.

Hearts announced his arrival in a statement which read: “Hearts have completed the transfer of Romanian defender Mihai Popescu from Dinamo Bucuresti.

“The 27-year-old has penned a two-year deal with the Jambos and will soon fly to Edinburgh to begin life as a Hearts player, subject to international clearance.

“As per Government Covid-19 guidelines, Mihail will have to quarantine for two weeks upon arriving in Scotland before he can start training with his new teammates.

“Standing at 6ft 2ins tall, the big defender started his professional career with Dinamo in 2013, enjoying loan spells at a handful of Romanian clubs including Voluntari, whom he won the Romanian Supercup with in 2017.

“He spent the second half of season 2018/19 in Scotland after joining St Mirren on loan. It was a successful spell for the centre-half after he helped defeat Dundee United in the Premiership play-off, thus ensuring the Paisley side’s top-flight status.

“Last season Mihai played 27 games for Dinamo as they got to the semi-final of the Romanian Cup, and has featured a total of 69 times for the Bucharest side.”
