Hearts have begun pre-contract talks with winger Josh Ginnelly in the hope of keeping him at Tynecastle Park permanently.

Initial discussions have taken place with the 23-year-old, who is in the middle of a season-long loan from Preston North End. He has scored four goals in eight appearances for Hearts so far.

The Tynecastle hierarchy want him to remain in Edinburgh when his Preston contract expires this summer. There are no plans to rush the talks as both parties explore the possibility of a suitable long-term agreement.

Ginnelly has stood out with explosive wing play and finishing since arriving in Scotland, scoring on his return at the weekend as Hearts won 3-1 at Alloa.

The player would be interested in a permanent move north if offered one. He is already popular among the Tynecastle support despite fans being prevented from attending games due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Ginnelly recently recovered from the virus and is now aiming to improve match sharpness over the coming weeks. He will remain a key part of the Hearts team as they try to win the Championship title and automatic promotion to the Premiership.

Playing in Scotland’s top flight next season would enhance the club’s appeal when it comes to strengthening their squad.

Ginnelly is one of several signing targets for the new campaign as Hearts will look to improve many areas of their team if they manage to complete a Premiership return.
