The unexpected news immediately had Hearts fans reacting on social media. Here’s what they had to say:

@Red_Dwarf_Posse: "COO at SFA! Hope he knows where the bodies are buried, could be useful."

Famous 1874: "Doesn’t seem to have a lot of footballing experience, very much a golf guy. Was hoping we had a football based person in that role which Budge failed in because of a lack of footballing knowledge."

@MainlandReece: "Can he play left back?"

JamboGraham: "Lawyer with prior experience at the SFA...pity he wasn’t on the books a couple of months ago."

@captainjamtart: "Hope we've cleared this appointment with Greenock Morton and ooh ahh Alloa."

Highlandjambo3: "Just hope he can blooter a water bottle when pissed off.....we’ve missed that type of person."

@grandpa_flump: "Delighted for Ann Budge that she has found someone to share her workload."

Notts 1874: "Good to see he's been written off already by some. Most of whom hadn't heard of him 5 minutes ago."

@MichaelWebb51: "Hopefully this means we'll be hearing less and less from Budge. She's made an **** of it and now passing the duties on to someone else."

The Fonz: "We absolutely needed this kind of appointment, so can't be disappointed with that."

@martinsmurray: "Ok but don’t come out with the crap about sticking with ‘the plan’ even though it’s clearly falling apart and be blindly stubborn. This is the real main cause of us being demoted. Get it sorted and all will be forgiven I’m sure from a vast majority including me."
