Dikamona, who played 36 times for the club, revealed that he hoped to return to Hearts in the summer, a point he made once again last week, admitting he would be happy to play for the team in the Championship.

On Friday, however, the club’s chair Ann Budge confirmed that only young players will be offered new contracts of those whose deals were expiring, and that Hearts are not in a position to sign anyone.

“We had a very small number of players out of contract at the end of May. It just isn't possible and doesn’t make any sense for me to extend anybody’s contract,” Budge told Hearts TV.

“We’ve had very amicable conversations with the individuals involved. It may well be that some of them end up back here again but I can’t extend.

“I can’t be asking people to take wage cuts and then taking on either new players or extending deals, so we won’t be extending any of the senior players.”

‘Fight for your club’

On Sunday, Dikamona posted a message on Twitter thanking the fans, while calling on them to continue support and fight for their club.

He posted: “I cannot remain silent, thank you for all the love you gave me during these 2 seasons and since I returned to France. I never thought I would end this experience this way but it is life who decided so…

“In the life of a club there is an institution, you fans and players. The institution and the fans stay forever but unfortunately the players all sign, play and leave one day.

“I would have liked to wear this new jersey but today was the most important is the institution and you fans, so fight for your club, and because you and only you can continue to make it live and succeed.”

Hearts fans inundated the player with posting comments thanking Dikamona for his service at Tynecastle.

The 29-year-old became a cult hero at the club due to his attitude and big performances in derby matches.

One fan said: “Gutted at this. Heart of a lion. All the best Clevid.”

Another posted: “Two absolutely heroic performances at Easter Road in particular stand out. You have total respect from the fans at Hearts because you gave your all every time you played. Very rare for any player to be universally so highly thought of. Best of luck Clevid.”

One tweeted: “Always welcome back at Tynecastle Clevid! You got what it meant to play for Hearts and the two heroic winning performances v Hibs, especially the one where you battled on despite hardly being able to walk, said everything about you and your commitment to Hearts, thank you!”
