Former Hearts captain Steven Pressley reckons it would be difficult to accept if the club were relegated without playing their final eight games.

The Tynecastle side could be one of the teams most affected if the SPFL’s resolution to terminate leagues is given the thumbs up by the 42 clubs.

While they wouldn’t automatically be relegated it would set a precedent for when the governing body decide to call the Ladbrokes Premiership with the lower leagues having already been called on the points per game basis.

Pressley, who was a central figure for the club between 1998 and his departure to Celtic in 2006, admitted it must be a “huge worry” for Hearts.

He told the Scottish Sun: “You could dispute Hearts’ situation, and whether or not the club are still in a position to achieve their goal of staying up. It’s still very possible. This is why the situation they are in is so hard to accept.

“Hearts are four points adrift with eight games to go. Survival is more than achievable, especially when you are playing the teams around you after the split. They have left themselves in a very difficult situation, but it’s not beyond them.

“For me, that’s why the Hearts situation is the most difficult one for anyone to call.

“Hearts will be desperate to get the league restarted and quite rightly so.

“They will feel they can still overturn the deficit.

“But whatever happens won’t be an ideal scenario. I’m hoping they get the chance to survive in the Premier League.

“Whatever decision the clubs come to, this isn’t a position they particularly want to find themselves in.”

Hearts chairman Ann Budge has revealed she doesn’t think the SPFL resolution will pass and that she has asked the SPFL for more time to discuss possible solutions.

Clubs have until 5pm today to submit their vote.
