Intensity concern

Throughout pre-season Robbie Neilson talked about the “intensity” of play from his Hearts side. That was missing throughout their win over Cowdenbeath. During the first half the Tynecastle boss bellowed at his players that play was “too slow”. It was pedestrian at best as the ball was moved from side to side. By the time it got to the wide men opponents were back behind the ball nullifying space. The team lacked a player willing to drive from deep and commit opponents.

The concern for fans and perhaps the management themselves is that the frustrating afternoon in Methil is a portent for the season ahead. Plenty of possession but a lack of penetration against a team which is well organised and defends deep.

Naismith’s place?

It was revealed after the match Steven Naismith was removed at half-time as a precaution due to his back on the artificial surface. Supporters are still waiting for the return of the player who was so influential during the 2018/19 campaign. The 34-year-old has cut a frustrated figure the past year or so, with his standards so high, which was clear to see even in the warm-up where he demanded the best. He led the line against Cowdenbeath but there was a definite lack of sharpness as he was easily marshalled with his one chance blocked. It is only fair to query if the club captain would make the strongest XI with everyone fit and where he fits in the 4-2-3-1.Frear impact

All three wingers signed in the summer were involved on Saturday. Jordan Roberts and Josh Ginnelly started on either side before being moved centrally towards the end of the first half. After some early promise down the flanks their influence waned. It’s a football cliche about wingers’ inconsistencies, but there is a degree of truth in it, especially at this level. Ginnelly was excellent against Inverness CT but rarely attacked the Cowdenbeath full-backs. Neilson, however, was shrewd to bring in three and the third, Elliot Frear came off the bench and provided a positive impact down the left, linking with Aidy White and sending in a few dangerous crosses. He set up the winner with his corner for Craig Halkett.
