The Kirkcaldy side hadn’t played since December due to a number of postponements and then a Covid outbreak at the club which meant the players trained just once before the weekend’s game.

Rovers took a 3-0 lead after a hugely impressive performance in the first 55 minutes of the match, which even included a missed penalty. Goals from Gozie Ugwu, Manny Duku and Regan Tumility put the visitors in a commanding position to hold on to the three points after a Hearts onslaught.

Former Hearts boss McGlynn revealed his team selection plans due to the situation at the club in the lead up to the game.

“We went mostly with the guys who tested negative. So most of the ones who played were the fitter ones. A lot of that was our stronger ones.

"We’re pleased with how well they rallied. Only having one day of training is never ideal going into a game like this. So I have to compliment the players for that.

"We were dangerous on the counter-attack and in the wider areas. We got down the sides well.

“We knew we were going to come under pressure. It’s like Hearts going to Ibrox or Celtic Park. You might have good intentions but you’ll get pushed back. You lose territory but the rest of the gameplan worked.”

He added: “I’m very proud of the boys for that performance. More so because of what we’ve been through but even regardless of that. To come here under any circumstances and win here and score three goals is fantastic.

"It’s an amazing effort from each and every one of the players. I thought we were lethal and used our opportunities very well. And we’ve even missed a penalty. You’d expect to score but it’s an amazing save from Craig Gordon on to the post.”

McGlynn reserved some praise for ex-hearts goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald who was in inspired form between the sticks making a raft of impressive stops.

“Jamie had a few cracking saves for us. He’s worth his weight in gold.

"He’s an outstanding goalkeeper but also an outstanding character. He’s great in the dressing room and his experience is vital. A top professional.”
