Hearts first-team coach Lee McCulloch picked out young forward Euan Henderson as one of the best finishers at the club.

The former Rangers and Scotland star has been impressed by the 20-year-old’s ability in front of goal and admitted such a confession may be a “surprise”.

Henderson was on target in the club's 4-0 win over Raith Rovers on Tuesday having replaced Josh Ginnelly in the first half.

It was only his second goal in more than 30 appearances.

McCulloch picked out Liam Boyce and captain Steven Naismith as the club’s most capable finishers, while adding Henderson to that list in an interview with Hearts podcast Scarves Around the Funnel.

He said: "One that might surprise: Euan Henderson. Fantastic finisher with both feet. I think he just needs a little bit more confidence and belief in himself.

“I was delighted for him [scoring against Raith].

“We played a couple of friendlies, closed door friendlies in pre-season. In one of the games he scored four goals.

"The standard of his finishing was phenomenal.

"He can do it but maybe a little bit more belief in himself, we can certainly help with that, he can maybe make an impact.”

McCulloch also praised the quality of a number of the club's young players, including Cammy Logan and Connor Smith, who both moved out on loan to Cove Rangers prior to the shutdown below the Championship.

However, he reserved plenty of admiration for goalkeeper Harry Stone, who is viewed by some at the club as a long-term successor to Craig Gordon.

“I love his attitude,” McCulloch said. “The young boys are in a little bit earlier to help get the mannequins, balls blown up and taken out to the training pitch. Harry’s always first in, first to help out and then he’s got ability as well.

“I think there’s two things you look for in young kids.

"Obviously their ability and then you look at their attitude, their attitude to get better and attitude to do the not so fancy side of the game, work hard and push yourself to the limit. Harry Stone definitely does that.”
