Mark de Vries gives inside story on ex-Hearts star Phil Stamp's infamous indoor barbecue

Former Hearts striker Mark de Vries has revealed the inside story on the night ex-team-mate Phil Stamp decided to have an indoor barbecue.

The two former pros were stand-out members of the 2002/03 team under Craig Levein, a side which finished third in the SPL table and had a real penchant for scoring late goals, especially against derby rivals Hibs.

Stamp, beloved by the fans for his all-action midfield play, would hit the headlines during his time at Tynecastle for damage sustained to his rented house.

Speaking to the Scarves Around the Funnel podcast, de Vries reveals one of the ‘crazier’ episodes involving the Lanark Road property.

He said: “After a night out, Phil Stamp says he’s hungry. So he says to go to his and he’ll make some food.

“So we’re thinking he’s going to put the frying pan on. No chance.

“So we’re in the house and he brings the barbecue in. Like a proper barbecue. We’re looking at each other thinking ‘is he serious? There’s no way he’s going to put it on’.

“Yes he does. Phil just fires up the barbecue and starts putting burgers and stuff on. Of course, we didn’t eat from the barbecue, because as soon as he does the alarm went off at like 3.30 in the morning.

“We were trying to put the alarm off by hitting it with our shoes, missing it of course.

“He was crazy. You don’t just put your barbecue into the livingroom and fire it up. We all knew what was going to happen.”
