Steve Clarke’s decision to run down his contract as Scotland national team manager opens discussions on his potential successor. Clarke will lead the country through the World Cup 2026 qualifiers hoping to reach the finals, and is then expected to bow out of Hampden Park as his deal will have expired.
There are options across the globe when it comes to the next incumbent. From Africa to Australia, many coaches of differing ages and background would be interested in coaching Scotland. Some may not necessarily be household names in this country, although some are well-known faces around the Scottish and English leagues.
We have compiled a fairly eclectic list of managers who could do a job as the next man in charge of Scotland:

5. DJAMEL BELMADI
Age 49. Won the African Cup of Nations with Algeria in 2019 and currently unemployed after leaving that post in 2024. Previously managed two Qatari clubs as well as the Qatar national team. Known for a bold and technical brand of football, he seems to favour working in warm countries. Scotland may not appeal for that reason. As a coach, he is attack-minded and adventurous and the prospect of him pitching up in Mount Florida would be intriguing. | SNS

6. GRAHAM ARNOLD
Age 61. Hugely popular Australian who left his job as national coach last year. Took the Socceroos to World Cup 2022 in Qatar, leading them to the last 16 where they lost to eventual champions Argentina. Arnold has never managed in Europe but is keen to work here. He carries plenty international experience and would likely be tempted by another national team offer on this Continent. An established figure at who is not afraid to introduce new players to the squad. | SNS Group

7. SLAVEN BILIC
Age 56. Very experienced Croatian who is out of work after leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Fatteh claiming he didn't get paid. Coached Croatia for six years, reaching Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. Managed West Ham, Watford and West Bromwich Albion as well as Lokomotiv Moscow, Besiktas, Hajduk Split and Chinese club Beijing Guoan. Would cost a lot in wages and working in Scotland may not appeal to him, but he would set up a well-structured team able to defend and attack in equal measure. | SNS Group 0141 221 3602

8. DEREK McINNES
Age 53. A wily campaigner in the Scottish league who guided Aberdeen to four cup finals, winning the 2013/14 League Cup. Named Manager of the Year that season. Now at Kilmarnock. Would be seen as a safe pair of hands for Scotland, although as such he may also be viewed as similar to Steve Clarke in some ways. Remains to be seen if he wants to work at international level but his knowledge and experience of Scottish football is extensive. | SNS Group
