Rangers agree transfer for ex Hearts star as 'superb' Tynecastle trait plays role in Ibrox deal

Rangers have unveiled the signing of Cammy Devlin who becomes the latest player to swap Hearts for Ibrox.

Rangers have confirmed the signing of Cammy Devlin after the midfielder’s exit from Hearts.

The Jambos announced on Friday that the Australian international had missed a deadline to extend his contract in Gorgie and now joins their Premiership rivals on a deal that possibly extends until 2029. He joins striker Lawrence Shankland in swapping Hearts for Rangers at the end of their contracts, with Derek McInnes now manager of the Ibrox side, following his sole term as Tynecastle boss last season.

Devlin joined Hearts in 2021 and made 176 appearances in maroon. Speaking on the deal, McInnes insists that the battler’s consistency while he was his manager proved a driving factor in the transfer, as the 28-year-old takes an extended break following Australia duty at the World Cup.

Why have Rangers signed Cammy Devlin?

McInnes said: “Cammy is obviously a player I know, and I am well aware what he will offer to Rangers. His levels of consistency for me were superb, and he is the type of player that every manager wants in his team.

“He is someone who knows the Scottish league, and nothing will surprise him with what lies ahead. I am looking forward to welcoming Cammy to Rangers and working with him again after he returns from his holiday.”

The new Rangers midfielder insists it’s an honour to pull on his new club’s jersey and he is in no doubt of what will be expected of him. He said: “It feels amazing. I am obviously so happy to get it over the line; with the gaffer coming here and a lot of change happening at the club, it feels like a great time to be coming here.

What has Cammy Devlin said about joining Rangers?

“It is just an absolute honour and privilege; I am so aware, being in Scotland for a while now, the size of the club and everything that comes with playing at such a massive football club. To call myself a Rangers player now feels pretty special and I just cannot wait to get started.”

A Rangers statement adds: “Rangers can announce the signing of midfielder Cammy Devlin on a two-year deal, with the option for an additional year, subject to international clearance. The Australian international joins following the expiration of his contract with Heart of Midlothian, where he will reunite with manager Derek McInnes.

“Devlin made over 150 appearances for the Edinburgh outfit and was a central figure for the side in the last campaign as they recorded the highest Scottish Premiership points tally in the club’s history. He has been an ever-present for the Edinburgh side since, establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Scottish Premiership alongside his appearances for Hearts in European competition.”
