The first in a three-episode series of This Is Our Story: Inside Hearts is screened tonight at 9pm on BBC One Scotland. It offers inside access to Tynecastle Park during the tumultuous 2019/20 season.

Hearts had three different managers and were relegated in that period before Neilson took charge in June. He said the programmes are similar to Netflix’s Sunderland Till I Die but with more detail on club operations.

“I’ll tune in. I didn’t even know Hearts were doing it. It wasn’t until I came in that the camera crew turned up,” he said. “I think I’m in the third one but I’ll definitely be watching it to see what it’s like.

“To be fair, they [the film crew] were fine. They were very rarely in, I only saw them a couple of times. From what I’m hearing it’s more of a behind-the-scenes look at how a football club is run, as opposed to how a football department is run.

“It will probably be quite interesting for fans to see how the shop works, the ticket office, the commercial department, but I don’t think it’s as much geared towards the football as everyone might have hoped.”

Neilson is a fan of sports documentaries. “I think they’re quite good. The American football ones are very good and I watched the Sunderland Till I Die one as well.

“They’re interesting but, from what I’m hearing, this one is a little bit different because it’s not as focused on the football side of things.”
