The starter may have been pretty bland at the home side went into the interval 1-0 ahead but after the break fans, watching from home, were treated to seven goals with the game finishing 5-3.

There was plenty for supporters to get their teeth into, especially Christophe Berra turning into an effective winger.

@lewismckenzie_: “Berra doing more as a winger than Roberts and Frear have ever shown in a Hearts jersey.”

@jamiekborthwick: “Whatever you paid to watch that Hearts v Ayr stream, it wasn't enough. Wild.”

@JamboFanTV: “It’s a win that’s all I can say about that. Thank God for Wighton and Berra on the wing.”

@maroonspecs: Our soon-to-be 36-year old centre back has created more in this game (and possibly this season) than Elliott Frear and Jordan Roberts combined. Let that sink in. Jokes aside, today was a chance for both Frear and Roberts to show they have something to offer and neither did anything to prove their many doubters wrong. Have to wonder what Neilson sees in them when he appears so reluctant to give Henderson a shot instead. He'd do no worse.”

@heartsstats: “Craig Wighton the first Hearts player to score a double off the bench since Abiola Dauda at Dingwall in February 2016

@PansHearts: “21 goals in 3 Hearts games. Get us back into the ground!

@IanW1874: “Another game where the substitutions we made had a positive impact on the game but we've given away too many cheap goals already. That third goal was amateur stuff but thankfully didn't cost us. 5 more goals at home the main positive and we are creating plenty of chances.”

@skacxl: “5 goals. 3 points. Onto the next.”

@davidlloydreid: "Five goals at home but... an incredibly sloppy performance and not one that would be good enough against better opposition.”

@TheOldCastleRo1: “Hope Ayr enjoyed our Xmas gift of 3 goals to make the scoreline look nicer for them.”

@tired1874: “Well done, might've not been a great performance, but to get back to winning ways after last week's disappointment is incredible. Considering every team you play are going to go all out as it's Hearts, so onwards and upwards.”

@SWhyte1874: “Bonkers 2nd half but at least we got the win in the end.”
