A few eyebrows have been raised amongst fans, especially regarding the return of Christophe Berra.

It is the former captain’s first start in the league for the club since December 26, a 2-0 defeat to Hibs.

He replaces Mihai Popescu who came in for criticism following his performance in Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Dunfermline Athletic.

The Romanian hit the woodwork twice with headers but was too slack too often with his passing, much to the frustration of some of his colleagues.

Neilson came to the player’s defence in the media but has opted to drop him for Berra.

It is a decision which has split opinion on social media with fans. Some are unsure of his inclusion while others are happy to see him replace the outgoing Popescu.

The return of the veteran centre-back will put more onus on Craig Halkett to play out from the back with Alloa likely to sit off Hearts until the home side enter their half.

The omission of Andy Irving from the squad has also raised eyebrows with supporters keen to see the ‘Porty Pirlo’ in the middle of the pitch.

The midfielder misses out due to a head knock sustained during Friday’s clash with Dunfermline. Protocol means he has to sit out the game but should be back for Saturday’s fixture in the Betfred Cup when the two teams meet again at the Indodrill.

Peter Haring is a welcome face in the middle of the park. Andy Halliday and Olly Lee with Steven Naismith in front were kept quiet by the hard-running of Dunfermline’s excellent Kyle Turner and Kerr McInroy, supported by ex-Hibs ace Steven Whittaker at the base of the midfield.

The dynamism between the two sides was stark at East End Park with the Pars much more vibrant and bright, while Hearts were largely pedestrian.

As expected, Josh Ginnelly doesn't make the game after being pulled out of training. Instead Jamie Walker and Jordan Roberts are tasked with adding pace and penetration to the wings in support of Liam Boyce.
