Hibs boss expecting more offers for Jason Cummings

Jason Cummings has scored three goals in Hibs' first two league games of the season

The Capital club knocked back a mammoth £1.7 million bid for the 21-year-old on the eve of the new season from English League One club Peterborough United, adamant they were in no need to sell and were intent on keeping their top scorer of the two previous seasons to spearhead their assault on the Championship title.

Cummings, pictured above, has kept his name in the headlines, scoring three goals to help Hibs win their opening two league games against Falkirk and Dunfermline with Lennon well aware every time he finds the net he’s liable to attract further interest.

While insisting that, as far as he is concerned, Cummings, who has only just signed a new four-year deal, will remain a Hibs player, Lennon said: “There have been no further offers but I would not be surprised if there are. Jason scored again at the weekend, the winner, and has made a massive contribution already this season. We had a good offer from Peterborough but we are in the position to say ‘thanks, but no thanks’. It was up to £1.7m. It wouldn’t have been £1.7m up-front but over a period of time. It was still a very fair offer but we think he is worth more and will be worth more.”

Although he’s revealed that Cummings was of “a mindset to go” earlier in the summer, Lennon was determined to keep him, inviting the player and his agent to join him in Paris where he was working for the BBC at Euro 2016, and managing to persuade his star player to commit to that long-term contract.

But Lennon also felt it would be in Cummings’ own interests to stay at Easter Road, expressing the belief he’ll continue to improve as a player by remaining at Hibs.

He said: “Jason is a big fish here in Edinburgh – he is at home. He’s only 21 and I don’t think he is ready to go to  England quite yet.”
