The Evening News revealed earlier this week that signing an experienced proved goalscorer was a priority for new boss Neil Lennon, Emile Heskey later disclosing he’d knocked back the chance of a move to Easter Road.

But 32-year-old McDonald, a free agent after his Fir Park contract came to an end, is well known to Lennon, who was a coach under Gordon Strachan when the Australian internationalist was at Celtic Park.

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee is keen to keep McDonald, who scored 14 goals last season, but the hitman, who has also played for Middlesbrough and Millwall, fits the bill as far as Lennon – who has only Jason Cummings and James Keatings as recognised out-and-out strikers – is concerned.

He will, however, face stiff competition with McDonald understood to be considering a number of options.
