Hibs' Fraser Fyvie faces race to be fit for League Cup final

Hibs midfielder Fraser Fyvie is facing a race against time to be fit for next month's League Cup final after being ruled out of tomorrow's Tynecastle derby with a knee injury.

The Easter Road player was caught late by Morton substitute Jai Quitongo – son of former Hearts winger Jose – in the dying minutes of Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory at Cappielow.

Now head coach Alan Stubbs has confirmed Fyvie has sustained a slight medial ligament injury which will keep him out for “three to four weeks” – a tight timescale if the former Aberdeen and Wigan player is to face Ross County at Hampden on March 13. But, while disappointed to lose such a key figure, Stubbs admitted he was relieved the damage wasn’t more severe. He said: “Fraser’s out tomorrow. He’s got a slight medial ligament injury which is probably going to keep him out for three or four weeks. It’s disappointing, but it could have been worse. Yes, we’re disappointed, but we’re actually relieved it’s nothing more significant.”

Stubbs, however, had better news on centre half Liam Fontaine, who limped out of the Morton match after only 11 minutes after apparently picking up a thigh problem. “He’s got a chance (for tomorrow’s Scottish Cup fifth-round tie with Hearts),” insisted Stubbs. “He hasn’t trained but he’s been outside which is a real positive. We’ll see how he is today in terms of how he’s reacted. If he’s fine, we anticipate him being ready for tomorrow.”
