The Hibs midfielder has been an ever-present in the Scotland squad throughout 2016 and, after winning two caps, he has a chance of featuring against England at Wembley on Friday.

The 22-year-old first earned full international recognition on the back of some eye-catching form last season under Stubbs, who gave him a platform to flourish at Easter Road after buying him from St Mirren in summer 2015.

The Liverpudlian believes McGinn’s career is now firmly on an upward curve. “It would be fantastic for John if he could play a part on Friday,” said Stubbs. “It would probably be the biggest game of his career so far if he did, considering the rivalry between the teams.

“When we brought him in, we thought he could really push on and do well, and that’s proved the case. I was just part of John’s development, I don’t take any credit for that. The credit is for John himself. He’s the one who applies himself, works hard, improves and excels. His coaches along the way just try and help him improve and fulfil his ambition of being a top player one day. I think he’ll just keep on getting better.”
